Gush Etzion Winery (Gush Etzion)

Gush Etzion is located in the Tribal Inheritance of Judah, a mountainous region amongst the highest in Israel. Gush Etzion is known as a center for winemaking, and its inhabitants received the biblical blessing “He washes his garments in wine, and his robes in the blood of grapes.” Our sages interpreted these words as a prophecy promising that in the area “Wine will flow as if from a spring.” The many ancient wine presses found throughout the region further testify to the historical status of Gush Etzion as a center for winemaking.

When Shraga and Tamar Rosenberg moved to Efrat twenty five years ago, Shraga planted a few fruit trees in his garden. Amongst them was a blackberry vine. Realizing the fermentation potential, Shraga decided to try his hand at producing homemade liquor. The successful production of blackberry liquor led Shraga to take more and more interest in the field of wine making. He planted a few grape vines in his backyard and began to experiment with producing wine from their fruit. As time passed Shraga’s passion for wine making grew and grew.

Shraga’s Basement became a small winery in which he crafted 700 bottles of wine a year, among them Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Within a few years wine making became Shraga and Tamar’s primary profession. Shraga and Tamar began to draw up plans for a winery at the Gush Junction and partnered with local kibbutzim to plant vineyards, thus reviving the wine industry in Gush Etzion. Today there are six hundred dunams of grape vines planted in Gush Etzion. Nestled in their center is the gush Etzion Winery, under Shraga’s management.

The gush Etzion winery is committed to renewing the wine making tradition and Jewish Agriculture which existed in Gush Etzion for centuries. The Winery aims to make Gush Etzion into a wine making capitol in Israel as well as on the international scale.

Together with the Winery Shraga and Tamar opened a tourism destination. It includes both a restaurant and a  visitors center which offers wine tastings, vineyard tours and an archeological garden where one can learn about the ancient winemaking tradition in Gush Etzion.
